Profile

KANSAS LANDSCAPE ARBORETUM, INC

Located just south of Wakefield, the Kansas Landscape Arboretum is the largest in the State of Kansas.  An Arboretum is an outdoor classroom of woody plants and shrubs.

50 years ago when Milford Lake was under construction to men,  W.A. Flynn a nurseryman from Abilene and Prof Lelan Quinlan from K-State, were able to obtain a long term lease on government property to develope a Kansas Landscape Arboretum.

Native plants and trees populate the natural creeks and draws.  In these areas three nature trails have been carved out in the tree covered canopy and grasslands, the Woodland Trail, the Wildflower Trail and the Willow Meadow Trail.

Along with the native trees, hundreds of additional trees have been planted, some growing now for 50 years, such as the Oak Tree collection.  One can observe and study trees that are not native to this area such as the Ohio Buckeye.  About 45 different varieties of flowering crabapple trees provide a glimpse of the different fruit, shape and size.  There are collections of black walnut, green ash, sycamore and maple trees plus others.  Memorial trees are scattered throughout the arboretum with markers giving the name of the tree and in whose memory they were donated.

The Arboretum is open year round and there is no admission charge.  To find the Arboretum go south out of Wakefield on Dogwood Street about 1 1/2 miles.  Or, so south on Sunflower Road off Hwy 82 two miles to 5th Road then one mile east.

Take a relaxing drive and experience the changing colors of the seasons.  Go on a hike through the nature trails.  Enjoy nature at its best.
