Specific Need
The Wakefield Museum Association is currently focusing this year on a project at the historic Sts. John & George Episcopal Church, which is under the umbrella of the Wakefield Museum. Access to the church entrance is in need of a new ADA compliant ramp, which will entail a concrete ramp with metal railings. In 1995, the Church was given to the Museum from the Episcopal Diocese with the agreement that the Church be maintained by the Museum, and could be used for purposes suitable for a church or a museum. The Church has since been used for several weddings, funerals, and church services, with congregants attending from as far away as Marysville, Topeka, and other outlying areas.
Mission
A Kansas community-based museum focused on preserving the past for the enrichment of the future.
Profile
The Wakefield Museum Association, a non-profit 501(c) (3) organization, was created in 1974 to serve as custodian of the history of the community of Wakefield and the surrounding Republican River Valley communities. The Museum displays memorabilia of the communities, and houses genealogical records of the people who founded, lived in, or are presently living in the communities. The Museum, with the expansion of our recent new addition, now has over 14,400 square feet of displays and artifacts, including Native American, African, military memorabilia from veterans of all US wars and military branches, WRHS and WHS schools, churches, organizations, and businesses. The Museum has become a resource for genealogical research and a focal point of the community, drawing nearly 1,000 visitors annually to the area.
Also under the Wakefield Museum Association umbrella are the Sunny Slope School, and the Sts. John & George Episcopal Church & Glebe.
